Two things that save you a trip.
If it is a chair
Measure the width of the space it goes in, and how far it can sit from the wall. Across the line those range from 30 to 45 inches wide, and 15 to 30 inches of clearance. Knowing your numbers is the difference between trying three chairs that could work and trying eight that cannot.
A photo of the room on your phone helps more than people expect.
If it is a mattress
Know your size, and know whether anyone else sleeps on it. If they do, book a time you can both make — two people rarely want the same firmness, and neither of you can answer for the other from memory.
